Skip all the fluff, take me straight to the
index of 2013 gigs,
or get me out of here via the
site navigation.
Starting in the spring of 2009, it was decided that every six weeks or so we would replace the regular rehearsal with a performance rehearsal at a worthy venue such as an assisted living facility. Because these performance rehearsals will be at the regular rehearsal time on the regular rehearsal day, we hope to have an effectively full turnout.
Julie Fletcher kindly agreed to undertake the task of organizing these gigs. If you have any ideas for a possible booking, please feel free to contact Julie. When you do, please provide her with a name and a telephone number for the appropriate contact person, as well as the identity and address of the possible venue.
Note: it has to be the regular rehearsal timing, or reasonably close to it – starting at 7 p.m. if possible. Also, although we will perform for free if push comes to shove, we would much prefer that the venue contribute a small honorarium from their entertainment budget. The choir does not make a profit, and all monies go to defraying the expenses that the Ottawa Folklore Centre incurs to keep us going. If the event is a fundraiser, we always require an honorarium.
Saturday, April 20th we have our annual concert at the Sunnyside Wesleyan church.
The Ottawa Grassroots Festival
has asked us to perform this spring, yay!
We will be singing at 4:30 p.m. on
Saturday April 27th.
Wednesday, May 29th at 7 p.m. we have a gig at the Y down town.
Wednesday, October 23rd at 7 p.m. we have a
gig at the New Edinburgh Square
retirement community.
Wednesday, December 18th we have our regular Christmas gig at Camilla Gardens.
Our annual concert will be on Saturday April 20th.
The annual concert is a great way to show off to all your family and
friends!
We’ll get tickets and posters made up in March.
The $$ goes to the choir’s charity since 2004, the Ottawa Humane Society.
Over the last 8 years, Folks Voca has donated over $12,000 to the OHS. Yay!
The concert is looming. Starting in March, attendance is paramount;
if you wish to perform, you have to be present at all 7
of the rehearsals from March through April.
Lee says, “If you can’t make them all, you must talk to me.
I sometimes make exceptions if I know that a particular member is a veteran
and knows their stuff inside and out,
but don’t assume you are one of those!”
“We’ll do 2 sets of about 5-6 songs each;
the Sunday Jazz class will do 2 or 3 songs; Cuba gang will do 2,
and there may be an extra group doing a song or two as well.”
Here are the set lists for the concert:
Set One:
Set Two:
Fab Ones; please arrive this Saturday at 6 pm; we will meet downstairs
to prep for the concert.
Wear a bright solid colour (patterns look washed out on stage, no patterns or
stripes, please)

not washed out gray, and no blue jeans).

Date: Saturday April 27

Please arrive no later than 4
Please let Lee know if you CAN’T make it;
(if she doesn’t hear from you she will
know you can!)
We will be singing one set of 45 minutes duration.
Because we have fewer basses on Saturday, our repertoire will include
songs that are in 4-part harmony (tenors and basses sing together).
Here’s our repertoire; we’ll be going over it on Wednesday, so please have your books in order. (we’ll also do a bit of Boogie Fever, oh yeah!)
You can wear jeans, but make the top a bright solid colour. Lots of bling!.

The Y downtown would like Folka Voca to perform Wednesday evening, May 29. You superstars!!!
Lee would like us to meet at the church by 6:15 and carpool,
or make your own way;
there is free parking available but if we can keep the numbers low, that would be better.
They want us to start singing at 7:00 p.m.,
so we need to be at the Y by 6:30 p.m. at the latest.
We’ll sing for 45 minutes, then head back to the church.
If we get back before 9, more singing! Then off to the pub.
Here is a link to Google Maps showing the
location of the Y.
It’s at 180 Argyle Av., east of O’Connor, near the Museum of Nature.
The set list is the same as we sang for the Grassroots Festival:
You can wear jeans, but make the top a bright solid colour. Lots of bling!.

Wednesday December 18th, 6:30 p.m.
we have our regular Christmas carol gig
at the Camilla Gardens
Retirement Residence, 1119 Bathgate Drive,
Gloucester, ON K1J 9N4. Aim to be there for no later
than 6:15 p.m.
Folks, there is a seniors home in the east end, Camilla Gardens, that loves to have us perform for them. These are seniors without family; it means a lot to them that we’re coming. It’s very casual.
Parking is extremely limited, so Lee suggests as many folks as possible
car-pool over there.
If there is someone who can’t get a ride, let
Lee know
and she’ll see what she can do to make it happen.

Dress is casual.
Before the carols we will be singing a short set of our current songs.
There is now a cleaned up version of the Christmas Carol lyrics
in the order that
we are going to sing them, so do check the
resources page
for this New Version.
If you can, take the time to print an extra copy for a resident to use at the
sing-along.
After the gig, we will be returning to the Barley Mow pub
for our Choir Christmas Partay!
